Florida Mental Health Laws and Rules is a new 3-hour online continuing education (CE) course that is approved to meet the requirements of a Florida Laws and Rules course as a license renewal requirement for Florida-licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors.

Content of this course will include excerpts from the relevant Florida statutes and Administrative Code regulating the practice of social work, marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling, along with interpretive commentary and case examples. Included are Chapter 491 of the Florida Statutes – the practice act for these named professionals, Chapter 64B4 of the Florida Administrative Code – establishing the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy & Mental Health Counseling, and selected sections from Chapters 39, 394, and 456 of the Florida Statutes.

Emphasis is on those issues most important for practicing mental health clinicians in delivering ethical, legal, and competent professional services while attending to prudent risk management practices. The goal of this course is to make life easier for clinicians by presenting a brief summary of the relevant laws and rules of practice in the State of Florida, leading to an ever-increasing awareness of and conscious compliance with the particulars of those bodies of legislation. Domestic Violence: Child Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides information on identifying and treating victims of domestic violence.

Domestic violence, in the form of child abuse and intimate partner violence, remains a pervasive part of contemporary life in the U.S. Its effects are deep and far-reaching. This domestic violence CE course is intended to help healthcare professionals maintain a high state of vigilance and to be well prepared with immediate and appropriate responses when abuse is suspected or disclosed.

Information on the number of patients in a professional’s practice who are likely to be victims of domestic violence and the number who are likely to be perpetrators of domestic violence, screening procedures for determining whether a patient has any history of being either a victim or a perpetrator of domestic violence, and instruction on how to provide such patients with information on, or how to refer such patients to, resources in the local community, such as domestic violence centers and other advocacy groups, that provide legal aid, shelter, victim counseling, batterer counseling, or child protection services are included.

There is a special section on the complexity of an abuse victim’s decision about if, and when, to leave an abuser. This course will teach clinicians to detect abuse when they see it, screen for the particulars, and respond with definitive assistance in safety planning, community referrals, and individualized treatment plans.

Florida OT Renewal FAQs

We let you know last month that your Florida OT license renewal deadline has been extended and is now due by midnight on June 30, 2019. Click here for more info on the extension. Since then, many questions have been asked about how this will work.

Here’s the gist of it: If you have not completed all 26 of your required hours by 2/28, you’ll have until 6/30 to do so. If you have, any courses you take 3/1 forward will count toward your next renewal.

Brent Cheyne, OTD, OTR/L, FOTA President advises: “I recommend that every OT practitioner do their best to complete all the necessary CEs and to renew their license as soon as possible. This licensure renewal extension was intended for those suffering hardship and delays related to the Hurricane, and it was not intended to be taken advantage of by the whole of OT professionals in the state. You can avoid any undue complications, or unforeseen difficulties by renewing before the original date.”

Here’s a quick reminder of your renewal requirements:

CE Required: 26 hours each renewal, including:
2 hours Preventing Medical Errors (required each renewal)
2 hours Florida Occupational Therapy Laws & Rules (required each renewal)
1 hour HIV/AIDS (required first renewal only)
Online CE Allowed: 12 hours (14 hours must be live)
License Renewal Deadline: Original 2/28/2019 | Extension 6/30/2019
