Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) New Online Course

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides clinicians with practical guidance in understanding and using cognitive behavior therapy.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a new 2-hour online CE course that provides practical guidance in understanding and using cognitive behavior therapy.

The present-day popular psychological therapeutic orientation known as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a hybrid of three historical streams of influence: behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and rational-emotive therapy. Problematic behaviors addressed during treatment are assumed to have been acquired by learned processes of conditioning or modeling. Those behaviors may be overt (readily observable) and/or covert (such as thinking, feeling, emotional arousal, sexual arousal, expectations, and so on).

Advances in CBT have been made based on both research and clinical practice. Importantly, CBT is an approach for which there is ample scientific evidence that the methods that have been developed actually produce change. In this manner, CBT differs from many other forms of psychological treatment.

This course describes the developmental trajectory of CBT and outlines its major tenets and techniques, including the sailboat metaphor, the lighthouse metaphor, and goal visualization.

This course ends by reviewing a case history, which is published by the American Psychological Association with permission and recommended by the APA Clinical Practice Guideline for the treatment of PTSD. Course #21-54 | 2021 | 34 pages | 15 posttest questions

Successful completion of this course involves passing an online test (80% required, 3 chances to take) and we ask that you also complete a brief course evaluation.

IEP Goals New CE Guide

IEP Goals: S.M.A.R.T.E.R. STEPS® Guide is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides a framework for writing legally compliant IEP goals.

IEP Goals: S.M.A.R.T.E.R. STEPS® Guide is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides a framework for writing legally compliant IEP goals.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings give parents and professionals a chance to work together to design an IEP for children with learning disabilities who have been determined eligible for special education. The goals for academic achievement and functional performance set for each child are the core of the IEP. Goals represent what you and the other IEP team members think the child will be able to accomplish in their area(s) of disability – academic, developmental, and functional – in a year’s time. Annual goals must be written in measurable terms.

This course will focus on teaching professionals how to write legally compliant IEP goals using the S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Steps framework. These steps contain a variety of time-saving tips to help special education professionals understand the legal jargon related to IEP goal development. Examples will be provided to demonstrate the strategy so that participants can have a bank of goals for reference. Real scenarios will be problem-solved within the framework, so participants can have practical advice to share with their IEP teams.

Research on the need for compliant IEP goals will be presented based on the US Deptartment of Education’s findings from the Results Driven Accountability measures. Implications of these findings will be discussed as they relate to federal funding being tied to test results and progress on IEP goals. Recent court decisions will also be reviewed to emphasize the importance of developing compliant IEP goals. Course #21-35 | 2019 | 44 pages | 16 posttest questions

When evaluating whether or not an activity would be acceptable for Category A, the following questions should be considered:

  1. Is the program sponsored or co-sponsored by the Board, the APA, an APA-approved sponsor, or by NC AHEC?
  2. Does the program specifically identify psychologists in the target audience?
  3. Are contact hours specified by the sponsor?
  4. Does the program meet the topic areas specified in paragraph (g) of the Rule?
  5. Does the program provide a certificate upon completion?

If a licensee can answer “Yes” to all of the above, the activity would be acceptable for Category A hours. If even one of the five questions is answered in the negative, the activity does not meet the requirements to count for Category A hours.

There are no sponsorship requirements for Category B activities; however, a psychologist must be able to show that the activity either covers ethical and legal issues in the professional practice of psychology, or assists him/her in maintaining and upgrading skills and competencies within his/her scope of practice. While it is not required that licensees complete any Category B hours (all hours may be completed in Category A activities), one may count up to nine hours of Category B credit toward the required eighteen hours total.
