Teletherapy is a new 3-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides a foundation for using telehealth services in mental health practice.

Technology supported counseling and communication is known by many names: telehealth, telemental health, distance counseling, virtual counseling, and teletherapy, among others. It occurs when the mental health professional and the client are in two different locations. Therapy may be delivered via telephone, text, or, most commonly, an online platform with two-way video.

This course highlights the benefits of participating in teletherapy and addresses possible concerns or anxieties of using technology in therapy. Research and evidence-based strategies are used throughout the course to outline HIPAA challenges and inform regulatory compliance. Examples of selected clinical areas offer best telehealth practices from current literature. Certification and continuing education programs are discussed for ongoing study in this important area.

A variety of technological resources are presented, including teletherapy platforms, online networks, mental health therapy apps, phone applications, and websites. The course includes practical considerations to help the clinician determine how best to implement teletherapy into their practice. The course looks at strategies for engaging the client in telehealth as well as ensuring self-care for the healthcare professional. Course 31-31 | 2021 | 56 pages | 20 posttest questions

Cultural & Behavioral Health Disparities Amid COVID-19 is a new 4-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that examines the mental and behavioral health disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations during COVID-19.

Health Disparities Amid COVID-19 will address social determinants of health and their influence on mental and behavioral health outcomes for COVID-19. Research findings are presented to assist with the knowledge component of racial and ethnocultural responsiveness. We examine the mental and behavioral health disparities of racial and ethnic minority populations collectively and then separately, highlighting African Americans, Native Americans, and Latino/Hispanic groups.

We will investigate how racism and discrimination, economic inequality, healthcare access and utilization, work and home conditions, and mass incarceration contribute to COVID-19 morbidity and mortality rates among racial and ethnic minority populations. Poorer mental and behavioral health outcomes for COVID-19 reiterate the importance of addressing health inequalities, responding to systems of oppression, validating intergenerational trauma, removing barriers to healthcare access, and engaging in culturally responsive care.

This course will encourage you to self-reflect on the role of your own racial and ethnic identity. To aid in this process, self-reflection prompts are included periodically to promote the development of cultural humility. These prompts will help with the awareness component of cultural competency. An awareness of our own cultural values, biases, and assumptions is necessary to acknowledge racial bias, stereotyping, and where we are on the scale of privileged to marginalized, thus assisting in developing the skills necessary for the promotion of physical, mental, and behavioral health equity. Ethics for SLPs 2-Hour Online CE Course

Ethics for SLPs and Audiologists is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that examines ethical issues that SLPs and audiologists may encounter in clinical practice.

Ethics for SLPs is a new 2-hour online CE course that examines ethical issues that SLPs and audiologists may encounter in clinical practice.

Ethical decision-making is based on awareness, intent, judgment, and behavior. The speech-language pathologist (SLP) or audiologist must be aware that an issue has ethical significance. Ethics is about deliberate decisions made to benefit the people involved or to have the least harmful repercussions if a positive outcome is not possible.

SLPs and audiologists encounter ethical issues across the spectrum of practice settings, from pediatric treatment to care of elders in skilled nursing facilities. Ethics for SLPs and Audiologists will present an overview of ethical issues that arise in speech-language pathology and audiology practice, including barriers to ethical thinking, evidence-based ethics, economics, discrimination, abuse, bullying in the workplace, boundaries, confidentiality, social media, and infection control. Mindfulness – New Online CE Course

Mindfulness: The Healing Power of Compassionate Presence is a new 6-hour online continuing education (CE) course that will give you the mindfulness skills necessary to work directly, effectively, and courageously with your own and your clients’ struggles.

Mindfulness: The Healing Power of Compassionate Presence is a new 6-hour online CE course that will bring the power of mindful presence to your practice.

Compassion towards others starts with compassion towards self. Practicing mindfulness cultivates our ability to pay intentional attention to our experience from moment to moment. Mindfulness teaches us to become patiently and spaciously aware of what is going on in our mind and body without judgment, reaction, and distraction, thus inviting into the clinical process, the inner strengths and resources that help achieve healing results not otherwise possible.

Bringing the power of mindful presence to your clinical practice produces considerable clinical impact in the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, colitis/IBS, and migraines/tension headaches. As you will learn, the mindfulness practice has to be experienced, rather than talked about. This course will provide you with an excellent understanding of exactly what mindfulness is, why it works, and how to use it. You will also develop the tools that help you introduce mindful experiences in your practice, and how to deal with possible client resistance. Course #61-04 | 2021 | 90 pages | 35 posttest questions

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for Autism is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides evidence-based behavioral interventions for the minimally verbal child with autism.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is holding steady at one in 54 children. This course presents evidence-based strategies that can enable students with ASD and others who are verbally limited to become more effective communicators. The focus will be on the minimally verbal child, the child who has a small repertoire of spoken words or fixed phrases that are used communicatively. Included will be an overview of ASD, an introduction to the science of ABA for autism, the use of manding in communication training, techniques for direct instruction programming, and inter-professional collaboration strategies. Major points are illustrated throughout by case studies from actual practice. Course #21-43 | 2020 | 46 pages | 15 posttest questions

COVID-19: Picking Up the Pieces is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that examines the effects of the pandemic and the challenges we face moving forward.

This course will discuss the many aspects of COVID-19 that have affected us all, physically, psychologically, and economically. It will begin with a discussion of what pandemics are, and what differentiates COVID-19 from previous pandemics. We will then turn our attention to the psychological effects of a pandemic – from anxiety, fear, and uncertainty, economic and vocational challenges, to social isolation and the physical challenges that further compromise psychological adjustment. We will then look at the effects of starting over – from re-entry and reorganization to chronic anxiety, triggering, and even the stigma of being infected by or exposed to the virus.

Next, we will explore the ways in which the clinician can help the client. We will learn how shifting the client’s attitude toward adversity, introducing them to post-traumatic growth, and encouraging insight and reflection can promote psychological growth, even in times of psychological distress. The last section of this course consists of specific exercises the clinician can use with the client coping with COVID-19. Course #21-42 | 2020 | 39 pages | 15 posttest questions

Domestic Violence: Child Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides information on identifying and treating victims of domestic violence.

Domestic violence, in the form of child abuse and intimate partner violence, remains a pervasive part of contemporary life in the U.S. Its effects are deep and far-reaching. This domestic violence CE course is intended to help healthcare professionals maintain a high state of vigilance and to be well prepared with immediate and appropriate responses when abuse is suspected or disclosed.

Information on the number of patients in a professional’s practice who are likely to be victims of domestic violence and the number who are likely to be perpetrators of domestic violence, screening procedures for determining whether a patient has any history of being either a victim or a perpetrator of domestic violence, and instruction on how to provide such patients with information on, or how to refer such patients to, resources in the local community, such as domestic violence centers and other advocacy groups, that provide legal aid, shelter, victim counseling, batterer counseling, or child protection services are included.

There is a special section on the complexity of an abuse victim’s decision about if, and when, to leave an abuser. This course will teach clinicians to detect abuse when they see it, screen for the particulars, and respond with definitive assistance in safety planning, community referrals, and individualized treatment plans.

Ethics and Professional Wills is a new 1-hour online continuing education (CE) course that guides psychologists through the process of developing a professional will.

This course provides practical information and resources on how to meet the APA Ethics Code standards regarding pre-planning for the eventual expected or unexpected closure of your professional practice, while being sensitive to understandable possible anxiety and/or resistance surrounding this topic. Business strategies, including sample forms ready to be personalized for your use, are offered.

Clinical considerations are addressed in discussions of how to best meet patients’ needs during the termination of your work with them and their possible transfers to new clinicians, possible countertransference responses you may experience during expected closings and preparing for unexpected closings, and how to balance patients’ and your own needs during planned temporary or permanent business closings such as a maternity leave or retirement. Issues in addressing possible incapacitation of the psychologist are reviewed.

Finally, pre-planning for possible unexpected practice closings, as would occur after the sudden incapacitation or death of a psychologist, are discussed in detail, including how to develop a professional will, the designation of a professional executor, and arranging for confidential storage and disposition of patient records, following ethical and regulatory guidelines. A sample and fill-in-the-blank professional will are provided, facilitating your completion of a basic professional will by the end of the course. High Functioning Autism in Children – New CE Course

High Functioning Autism in Children is a new 4-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides strategies to help children with HFA navigate the “neurotypical” world with success.

High Functioning Autism in Children is a new 4-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides strategies to help children with HFA navigate the "neurotypical" world with success.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as of April 2018, the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing. This increase includes children on the higher end of the spectrum; those who have what is informally referred to as “high functioning” ASD. In this course we will use the term “HFA” and explore and discuss why children and adolescents with HFA behave the way they do.

Professionals will learn strategies for helping parents manage their child with HFA at home, particularly toward learning the skills required to set themselves up for success, ease transitions, and prevent meltdowns. Interventions for school success will encompass organizational skills and strategies to improve language, narratives, reading comprehension, writing, and attention skills.

Finally, children with HFA struggle socially, particularly with understanding the unspoken rules of social situations. Professionals will learn to assist children with the development of social skills, which include conversational skills so that they may better relate to their peers, and how to interpret the hidden curriculum in many different environments. Professionals can help their clients discover their strengths, while harnessing their capabilities, allowing them to navigate the “neurotypical” world with success. Effects of Digital Media on Adolescents

Effects of Digital Media on Adolescents is a 3-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that explores how digital media is affecting teens of successive generations.

It is becoming clear that the effects of digital media are affecting each successive generation of teenagers in ways that are only now beginning to come into view. iGen’ers’ communication and behaviors differ from those that characterized the Baby Boomers, Millennials, and the XGen’ers. We now know that the adolescent brain is still developing, and some digital behaviors do affect ongoing brain growth. Neuroplasticity can be affected by repetitive or obsessive behaviors, and the digital world offers risks for those adolescents who may engage in excessive video gaming. This course is for professionals, teachers, and parents who are seeking any available information that will help them to monitor their adolescents’ online behavior, teach teens how to remain safe while online, and model appropriate digital behaviors. Included are strategies that can help contribute to a balance between the digital world and the real-time, face-to-face lives of older children and adolescents.
