Florida Occupational Therapy Laws & Rules is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that meets the license renewal requirement of Florida Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs).

Florida Occupational Therapy Laws & RulesThis course addresses the Florida Laws and Rules contained in the Florida Occupational Therapy Practice Act and the Florida Occupational Therapy Rules. The purposes of this course are to (1) provide the opportunity for a comprehensive reading of the two documents listed above, (2) ensure that Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants in the State of Florida are fully aware of the laws and rules governing the license under which they are practicing, and (3) fulfill the requirement that Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants in Florida complete each biennial renewal period two hours of continuing education relating to the Practice of Occupational Therapy. Florida Mental Health Laws and RulesWhy study laws and rules (aside from the fact that our Florida licensure law requires it)? Don’t we already have multiple layers of laws, regulations, ethics and guidelines available to us from a variety of professional and regulatory sources? Furthermore, after engaging in professional practice over a number of years, don’t we pretty much know what to do and not do in most situations?

There are actually a number of fundamental reasons for psychotherapists to maintain familiarity with the laws and rules of the trade on an ongoing basis. Bottom line: awareness of laws and rules is good for your clients as well as good for you and good for your professional practice.

Florida Mental Health Laws and Rules is a new 3-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that is approved to meet the requirements of a Florida Laws and Rules course as a license renewal requirement for Florida-licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors. It is required every third biennium after initial licensure. Content of this course will include excerpts from the relevant Florida statutes and Administrative Code regulating the practice of social work, marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling, along with interpretive commentary and case examples. Included are Chapter 491 of the Florida Statutes – the practice act for these named professionals, Chapter 64B4 of the Florida Administrative Code – establishing the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy & Mental Health Counseling, and selected sections from Chapters 39, 394, and 456 of the Florida Statutes. Emphasis is on those issues most important for practicing mental health clinicians in delivering ethical, legal, and competent professional services while attending to prudent risk management practices. The goal of this course is to make life easier for clinicians by presenting a brief summary of the relevant laws and rules of practice in the State of Florida, leading to an ever-increasing awareness of and conscious compliance with the particulars of those bodies of legislation. Renewal Information from the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy:

Renewing online is as simple as going to www.FLHealthsource.com, clicking on the “Renew My License” button on the homepage, and following the instructions. The system will allow licensees not knowing their User ID and Password to log in after answering several specific validation questions.

By renewing and submitting the appropriate renewal fees, you are acknowledging compliance with all requirements for renewal have all been completed, including continuing education requirements. You are responsible for retaining proof of all earned continuing education hours for a period of four (4) years. All licensees renewing active licenses are subject to audit and may be asked to show proof of appropriate continuing education.

If you have any problems using online renewal or other questions about your renewal, please contact the Division’s customer contact center at 850-488-0595 and choose option 3.

Please note when you complete your licensure renewal you are confirming all renewal requirements are complete, including 26 hours of continuing education have been completed as required by Rule.

Current License Holder Renewal Information

  • $60 renewal fee ($55 renewal fee = $5 unlicensed activity fee)
  • 26 hours continuing education per each biennium

Twelve (12) hours of home study per biennium are allowed. Home study education is independent study and requires a certificate of completion. Home study education does not include a web-based, satellite transmitted or online instruction program that allows or requires the licensee to interact or communicate back and forthwith the instructor during the presentation of the program.
