A Rulebook for Arguments, Fourth Edition is a test only course (book not included). The book (or e-book) can be purchased from Amazon. It provides a basic introduction to the art of making one’s points rationally and eloquently, whether in speaking or writing. It offers – in a very brief format for quick learning and reference – simple rules for putting together a good argument. The course is designed to help psychotherapists use logic and critical thinking skills in their professional presentations and communications.
“Many people think that arguing is simply stating their prejudices in a new form,” says author Anthony Weston, a philosopher, teacher, and writer. “That is why many people think that arguments are unpleasant and pointless. In this book, ‘to give an argument’ means to offer a set of reasons or evidence in support of a conclusion.”
Why is this skill essential for mental health professionals? First, all professionals need to have well-developed skills for thinking critically, that is having the ability to analyze the evidence pro and con an assertion and make decisions and recommendations accordingly. Second, in mental health practice, clinicians help their clients make rational decisions about their lives. Doing so requires perceiving the fallacies in the client’s thinking and making a case for more functional decision making. Course #20-74 | 14 posttest questions
