Licensed New Jersey mental health counselors have a biennial license renewal with a November 30th deadline, even years. In order to renew a license, forty (40) continuing education hours are required. All 40 hours of continuing education are allowed for home study if NBCC approved. The board recognizes the National Board for Certified Counselors as a provider of New Jersey mental health counselors continuing education.
Five (5) hours of ethics and three (3) hours of social/cultural competency are required at each renewal. The following are examples of current ethics courses available: Ethics and Risk Management: Expert Tips and Ethics and Boundaries in Psychotherapy.
The primary goal of continuing education is to ensure the highest standards for the mental health counseling profession. All licensees are required to participate in continuing education activities that will increase competence and skill achieved through prior educational experiences.

New Jersey mental health counselors are required as a condition of license renewal to complete a minimum of 40 continuing education hours per licensure period, every two years – even years.
