Why patients get addicted to pain medicine, and how to get help

It usually starts innocently enough with a prescription for pain medication from a doctor. Maybe the patient is nursing a broken ankle or recovering from back surgery. But about 10 to 15 percent of people who take those pain killers experience euphoria and want to feel that way again. They take more. When they realize they are almost out of the prescribed medication, they find it is available from other sources. All of a sudden, it becomes a problem.
