Illinois-licensed psychologists will be required to obtain CE for licensure renewal following the 2012 cycle

The word is out that the Illinois Board of Psychology has mandated continuing education (CE) for licensed-psychologists. The requirement is expected to begin after the 2012 licensure renewal period.

Illinois-licensed psychologists renew their licenses on September 30th of even-numbered years and previously had no requirement to obtain continuing education credits in order to renew.

The Illinois Psychological Association took an active role in forming the language of the law so “we could make sure it made sense” according to Cheryl Hurst, PsyD, an Illinois-licensed psychologist.

The purpose of continuing education is to provide for the continuing professional education of all psychologists to protect the public from the practice of psychology by unqualified persons and from unprofessional conduct by persons licensed to practice psychology.

There is currently no information regarding the soon-to-be required CE on either the Board or IPA website. More info will be added as it becomes available.
