The diagnostic criteria for pedophilic disorder and its relationship to associated crimes, such as child molestation, human trafficking, prostitution, drug abuse, child pornography, and child abuse and neglect is discussed. Though the exact causes of pedophilia are still not well known, information is provided on its prevalence in society and highlights how pedophilic interests may arise. Sexual abuse cases from the news and case studies of pedophiles are also reviewed.

Current laws, legal definitions, and limitations are summarized, and a review of the research on sex offender treatments are presented, to increase practitioners’ understanding of pedophilia, so that they can ultimately identify and treat pedophiles for the purpose of safeguarding children. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a psychological disorder characterized by persistent patterns of grandiosity, fantasies of unlimited power or importance, and the psychic need for admiration or special treatment. Core cognitive, affective, interpersonal, and behavioral features appear in a pervasive pattern of interpersonal difficulties, occupational problems, and significant psychosocial distress, such as impulsivity, volatility, attention-seeking, low self-esteem, and unstable relationships.

We will examine therapeutic approaches, such as the MOTHER technique, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in light of the case studies presented. We will discuss how to cope with close relationships in which one partner frequently acts narcissistically or qualifies for a formal personality disorder diagnosis. Having to cope with the narcissistic behaviors shown by someone close can itself be psychologically distressing.

Most experts agree that dyslexia is characterized by, “marked difficulties with word reading, decoding, and spelling as evidenced by low accuracy and/or fluency on standardized assessments. There is also a general agreement that these difficulties should be inconsistent with or “unexpected” in consideration of other aspects of development, including general intellectual abilities.” There is now abundant evidence indicating that dyslexia is a localized weakness within a specific component of the language system: the phonologic module. However, dyslexia does not only affect reading, but that which is connected to reading: both spelling and writing. Furthermore, and of significant importance, it is not connected to intelligence.

We begin the course by briefly reviewing the history of dyslexia. We then discuss the signs, types, and causes of dyslexia, highlighting the importance of working memory and executive functioning skills.

We consider phonological awareness, including phonemic awareness, as the foundation for all literacy skills. Reading, spelling, and writing are discussed in separate sections, enabling the reader to focus on the necessary skills and remediation strategies for each. It is important to note that there is overlap of skills needed to read, spell, and write and therefore, information on phonics and other phonological awareness skills may be echoed throughout the course.

Practical accommodations, teaching strategies, and activities for supporting children’s academic and social emotional development are provided. A short review of assistive technological aids is also included.

We begin by exploring how the attention of today’s youth is susceptible to increased demands and overstimulation from screen related technology and the idea that children’s attention is a commodity, which can be cultivated and harvested with detrimental effects on their well-being. This leads into a brief discussion on the how, and possibly why, children’s mental health has deteriorated in recent years.

Evidence-based research on the positive effects of mindfulness on children’s social and emotional wellbeing is presented. Five mindfulness skill areas are introduced, followed by ten creative Mindful Minutes skill building techniques. For families and patients at the end of life, crisis is often a constant companion. Every medical decision, communication issue, patient decline or dip, and family conflict or disagreement requires a thoughtful understanding of the patient’s wishes, family functioning, medical prognosis, and disease path – all of which combine to create the crisis.

This course offers insights into the foundational attitudes and struggles of patients in end-of-life care; common emotional burdens caregiving exerts on the patient’s family; and typical areas of conflict among patients, family, and medical staff concerning end-of-life care.

We discuss various “filters” to help properly assess situations and study crisis management as a tool to aid the counselor and client in dealing with crises that occur during end stages. A comparison of four models for viewing family conflict in end-of-life crisis is presented. We also consider the details of the family systems model for understanding how families adjust and adapt to loss and conflict. Many professionals throughout the United States are mandated reporters of suspected child maltreatment. However, the legal requirement to report is often confusing to navigate in relation to other professional and ethical responsibilities. This workshop provides profession-based context to the role of mandated reporter.

The course opens with a brief history of mandated reporting and the changes to mandated reporting laws over time. We then discuss who is considered a “mandated reporter,” when a report to Child Protective Services (CPS) is necessary, and the concerns regarding under and over reporting.

A detailed discussion highlights the risk factors and indicators of maltreatment and provides specific definitions and examples of the four types of maltreatment (neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse).

Ethical and moral issues pervade our lives and healthcare professionals are constantly confronted with a variety of ethical and moral dilemmas. Decisions can have long-range effects professionally and personally, not only for the healthcare professional, but for patients, clients, healthcare entities, and society. Why does one decision win out over another? What constitutes the decision-making process? How do decisions impact those involved?

Occupational therapists are engaged in an “ethic of care,” where activities of daily living are not just a function, but also an expression of values. Helping people maintain their maximum possible functioning is seen in relation to society and the common good of all persons (Taylor, 2015). This is an abstract ideal that must be put into practice in an imperfect world. How does the occupational therapist make decisions about what is best for the person when there are difficult choices to make?

This course will discuss the common moral and ethical dilemmas that occupational therapists face. The course is based on the 2020 Code of Ethics of the American Occupational Therapy Association and research that offers evidence-based practice strategies. Note that the field of ethics changes over time. The AOTA states that the Code of Ethics “is designed to reflect the dynamic nature of the occupational therapy profession, the evolving health care environment, and emerging technologies that can present potential ethical concerns in practice, research, education, and policy” (AOTA, 2020). This course is updated every few years, but there will always be new information that affects the ethical practice of occupational therapy, and this must be considered during the decision-making process.
