Americans spend far less of their income on food than they did in 1960, so rising food prices are not an answer to the problem of huge portions, says Brian Wansink, author of “Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think.” Experts say people overeat because they do not understand how much food they need and because they do not look critically at the messages society delivers about how much and what to eat.
